The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., born Michael King Jr., was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. He led marches for blacks’ right to vote, desegregation of public schools, fair hiring practices, labor law reform, and other basic human rights at a time when segregation was still legal throughout much of the United States.

King's Legacy

One of Dr. Martin Luther King's greatest legacies is that he inspired millions around the world to take action against injustice without resorting to violence or hatred--something that resonates even today when racial tensions are high across America and beyond its borders. He also left a legacy of hope for future generations—the belief that justice can be attained through peaceful means rather than violence—and that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their race or skin color. His "I Have a Dream" speech is considered one of the most iconic speeches in modern history and continues to inspire people around the globe today.

Take A Moment

So this Martin Luther King Jr Day let's take a moment to pause from our everyday lives and remember all that he has done for us—not just as African-Americans but as citizens of this great nation whose freedoms we often take for granted but owe so much to him for acquiring them in the first place. We owe it to ourselves to continue striving towards greater justice, freedom, equality, peace, love—all things Dr King stood for during his life—so that generations after us can experience them too! Let's keep pushing forward with love in our hearts! Happy MLK Day!
