The Life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., born Michael King Jr., was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the Civil Rights Movement from 1954 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. He led marches for blacks' right to vote, desegregation of public schools, fair hiring practices, labor law reform, and other basic human rights at a time when segregation was still legal throughout much of the United States.

King's Legacy
